Internship to Entry-Level Jobs: Dewberry

Jan 2024

In the thriving landscape of Baldwin County, opportunities are all around, and for Cathy Barnette at Dewberry, it’s not just a workplace—it’s a place where potential flourishes. Dewberry, a nationwide firm specializing in planning, design, and construction, shapes environments and offers unique opportunities for interns to evolve into valuable team members.

Barnette, an integral part of Dewberry, emphasizes the distinct advantage they have in drawing from a diverse range of services within the firm to address local client needs.

“What sets us apart is our ability to leverage all the services within the firm to assist our clients locally,” she said, underscoring Dewberry’s commitment to creating comprehensive solutions.

This commitment extends to their internship program, now in its third year, which has proven to be a transformative experience for aspiring professionals. Barnette shared the success of two interns who transitioned into full-time roles after their internships at Dewberry, exemplifying the company’s dedication to skill-building and providing real-world exposure.

Dewberry welcomed three interns this year, a testament to their evolving engagement in nurturing emerging talents. Barnette said she sees this initiative not only as a training ground but as a potential pipeline for future employees, showcasing Dewberry’s investment in the growth of individuals.

Two of these interns found their way to Dewberry through EDA. Barnette highlights the quality of experiences these interns gain, providing them with insights into the landscapes of Mobile and Baldwin County. She said it’s not just about skill development; it’s about helping students envision their professional futures within the vibrant communities of the region.

One success story involves an intern who, after completing multiple internships, seamlessly transitioned into a full-time role post-graduation.

“Obviously, he enjoyed working with us, and he was learning things and building skills,” Barnette said. “He became a valuable part of the team. And so, it made sense if he were interested, to keep moving that momentum forward. If you are investing time and money, if it makes a good fit, it’s a win for the student and the company. He is basically hitting the ground running with us now.”

Barnette, a firm believer in broadening one’s experiences beyond the familiar, sees Baldwin County as an ideal landing spot for these ambitious students. She emphasizes the county’s multifaceted growth and the array of opportunities across various fields. As the internship program expands, it will show the vast potential Baldwin County holds for those willing to explore and contribute to its flourishing community.

“What I think is important for these students is that they understand that Baldwin County is growing in a variety of ways and that there are opportunities in all of the fields they are pursuing,” Barnette said.

“Particularly, as this program grows, it shows them that the opportunities are here. Where we know our community, where we love our community, we can build the best community it can be. So, that ownership and that involvement starts early, and I think it makes the entire area flourish.”
